Museum of Mobile
Built to serve as city hall and as a marketplace, the 1857 National Landmark building now serves as the Museum of Mobile. Permanent, as well as rotating, exhibits and galleries chronicle over 300 years of Mobile history and culture. Permanent exihibits take you back in time to Mobile’s first inhabitants, the stories of Mobile’s disasters, diversity, recreational activities, local industry and much more. The Discovery Room is an interactive exhibit for the young ones to get their hands on history.
Mobile Carnival Museum
Opened in 2005, the Carnival Museum contains fourteen gallery rooms, a pictorial gallery and theater that tell the story of how the celebration of Carnival and Mardi Gras in Mobile has evolved from its origination to the tradition it has become today. View the majestic crowns, scepters and robes of Mardi Gras monarchs, learn about the art of costume design and float construction, watch videos of parades and balls and experience the behind-the-mask view by climbing aboard a rocking float.
Mobile Museum of Art
The 95,000 square foot Mobile Museum of Art is home to more than 10,000 works in its permanent collection and hosts a variety of traveling exhibitions and regional art exhibits. Permanent collections include the African and Asian Gallery, American Fine Art, the European Gallery, a contemporary European studio glass collection, 19th and 20th century crafts as as well contemporary displays. The museum also hosts a range of educational programs, and can be rented for special occasions.
Bragg-Mitchell Mansion
One of Mobile's most historic homes, the 13,000 square foot mansion was built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg for his family to reside in Mobile during Thanksgiving through Mardi Gras. The last owner, the A.S. Mitchell family, purchased the house in 1931 for $20,000. In 1970 the house was donated to the Explore Center in order to create a science museum but it was later decided to build a separate Exploreum to preserve the historical integrity of the mansion.
